Bilingualizer (“App”, “Service”) is operated by Ondřej Macoszek (“we”, “us”, “our”).
Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information Bilingualizer processes, how it is used, where it is stored, and what rights you may have.
Bilingualizer is designed to be offline-first and to collect as little personal information as possible.
1. Overview
Bilingualizer helps you capture, translate, save, and review language-learning content.
Most content you capture, create, and review in the App is stored locally on your device. Bilingualizer does not require a user account and does not display third-party advertisements.
2. Information Processed by the App
Depending on which features you use, Bilingualizer may process:
- text captured from the camera,
- images captured with the camera,
- images you select from your photo library,
- text recognized from images,
- words and phrases you save,
- translations,
- learning progress and practice history,
- speech audio used for speech recognition,
- text entered manually,
- app settings and preferences.
This information is primarily stored locally on your device.
3. Camera Access
If you grant permission, Bilingualizer may access your device camera to capture images for text recognition and language-learning features.
Captured images are used to extract text and create learning content. If you save a photo-based item, the image and extracted text may be stored locally on your device.
4. Photo Library Access
If you choose to import an image from your photo library, Bilingualizer receives only the image you select.
The selected image is used to extract text for language-learning features. If you save the resulting item, the selected image and extracted text may be stored locally on your device.
5. Microphone and Speech Recognition
If you grant permission, Bilingualizer may access your microphone and speech recognition services when you actively use speech-related features.
Speech audio is processed to recognize spoken text for language-learning purposes. Bilingualizer requests on-device speech recognition. Availability depends on your device, operating system version, language, and installed resources; unsupported voice capture may be unavailable.
6. OCR, Translation, Speech, and Apple Services
Bilingualizer currently uses Apple-provided technologies for features such as:
- text recognition from images,
- translation,
- speech recognition,
- text-to-speech.
Some processing may occur locally on your device. Some processing may be handled by Apple services, depending on your device, operating system version, language, downloaded language support, and system settings.
When these services are used, information necessary to provide the requested feature may be processed by Apple according to Apple’s own privacy policies and terms.
Bilingualizer does not currently use third-party advertising or third-party AI SDKs.
7. Optional usage analytics
Builds configured for usage analytics ask for your consent after two meaningful exercise sessions. Sharing is off until you choose it, and you can choose or change your preference in Settings at any time. Refusal does not affect app features or pricing. Builds without analytics configuration do not send usage events or show the automatic request. The native Mac app does not send remote usage analytics.
With consent, Bilingualizer sends app session starts, successfully saved captures, exercise starts and ends, and opened built-in Library topics to our own analytics backend. Fields include a random installation identifier, random event/exercise identifiers, timestamps, app version, iPhone/iPad and app/CarPlay context, learning languages, predefined catalog topic/section identifiers, exercise settings and item counts, coarse session duration and outcome. The identifier links activity during that consent period; this is pseudonymous personal data, not anonymous data. It is separate from Apple’s advertising identifier and is not linked across other companies’ apps or websites.
We use these statistics to understand feature and content demand, reliability of exercise use, and product and plan priorities. We do not send captured text, images, translations, searches, custom topic names, individual vocabulary identifiers, or location. Analytics is not used to target advertising or shared with advertisers. Optional analytics processing is based on consent.
The backend retains linked events for 30 UTC calendar days, including today. The app keeps recent event payloads and delivery status for 30 days in Settings → Analytics → Recent analytics activity. Analytics files are protected locally and excluded from device backups. Pending events are limited to 500, expire after 24 hours, and may be retried using the same event identifiers; an acknowledged event means the server accepted the request, not that it is retained indefinitely. Hosting infrastructure necessarily processes connection information to serve requests; it must not retain IP addresses or payloads as usage analytics.
Turning sharing off immediately stops collection, clears local queued events and history, and requests deletion of linked server activity and consent metadata. Recent reports are rebuilt without that activity. A minimal hashed revocation marker remains for 48 hours to reject delayed submissions. If offline, the deletion request and the credentials needed to authorize it stay on the device until acknowledged; Settings displays its pending status. Delivery requires Bilingualizer to run with connectivity. Deleting the app before delivery cannot ensure the server receives the request. Opting in again creates a fresh identity, and its uploads wait for pending deletion to finish.
Older coarse daily event/surface and separate topic totals can remain for up to 12 months after the linked data expires. Retained cells with fewer than 20 installations are suppressed; this is a privacy safeguard, not a guarantee that any conceivable combination is anonymous. These older totals contain no installation or event identifiers. You may contact us using the details below to exercise applicable rights. Server backups and hosting retention must be configured consistently with this policy before analytics is activated.
8. Advertising
Bilingualizer does not display third-party advertisements.
9. User Accounts
Bilingualizer currently does not require user accounts.
You can use the App without creating an account or providing registration information.
10. Data Storage and Retention
Most data created while using Bilingualizer is stored locally on your device using the App’s local storage. Bilingualizer currently has no app-operated cloud synchronization. System backups are separate from app-operated sync.
This may include saved words, phrases, translations, learning progress, practice history, selected or captured images, and app preferences.
Local data remains on your device until you delete it within the App, delete the App, or remove it through your device storage or backup system. If your device backup system is enabled, local App data may be included in device backups according to your device settings.
11. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information.
We do not share your personal information with advertisers.
Information may also be processed by Apple services when required to provide features you choose to use, such as speech recognition, translation, text-to-speech, or image text recognition.
12. Legal Basis for Processing
Where applicable, including under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Bilingualizer processes information on the following bases:
- to provide the App features you request,
- with your consent for optional usage analytics,
- with your permission, such as camera, microphone, speech recognition, or photo library access,
- for our legitimate interest in operating and improving the App,
- where necessary to comply with legal obligations.
13. Children’s Privacy
Bilingualizer may contain learning content suitable for children, but the App is not designed to knowingly collect personal information from children.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to supervise children’s use of the App.
If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us.
14. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect information processed by the App.
However, no software, device, storage system, or transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You are responsible for protecting access to your device and managing your device backups.
15. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including:
- the right to access information,
- the right to correct information,
- the right to erase information,
- the right to restrict processing,
- the right to object to processing,
- the right to data portability,
- the right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent,
- the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Because most Bilingualizer data is stored locally on your device, many requests can be fulfilled directly by deleting data from the App or deleting the App from your device.
16. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
The most current version will be made available within the App or on our website.
